Abstract
Digital transformation has become a central determinant of competitiveness among small and medium-sized enterprises. Enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, workflow automation, data analytics, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence increasingly allow smaller firms to access capabilities that were historically available mainly to large corporations. Nevertheless, digital adoption remains uneven across firm sizes and European Union Member States. This paper examines how ERP, CRM, automation, and AI affect SME productivity, revenue growth, organizational efficiency, customer management, resilience, and competitiveness. Evidence indicates that digital transformation is generally associated with improved performance, but the relationship is conditional rather than automatic. ERP systems improve information integration and process coordination, CRM systems strengthen customer knowledge and sales processes, automation can reduce repetitive administrative work and transaction costs, and AI can increase analytical and generative capabilities. Technology alone, however, does not guarantee productivity. Complementary assets including managerial capability, employee skills, data quality, cybersecurity, process redesign, and system integration strongly influence outcomes. The paper argues that digital transformation should therefore be understood as an organizational capability rather than as a collection of software purchases. SMEs that progressively build integrated digital architectures are more likely to obtain sustainable productivity gains than firms that accumulate isolated tools without changing business processes.
